The Story
A Fortune 50 insurance company faced critical risks across their legacy systems powering insurance policy renewals, premium calculations, and claims processing. These fundamental applications are essential for ensuring revenue, maximizing profitability, and minimizing operational risk.
The organization confronted three major challenges with their existing systems:
Shortage of Qualified Support Personnel: Many systems were built using technologies that are no longer widely understood in the market. This scarcity of specialized knowledge left the company vulnerable to system errors and failures, with limited ability to quickly address issues in applications that run the core of their business.
Critical Security Vulnerabilities: Legacy systems were not designed to defend against modern cyber threats. Continued reliance on these applications exposed the organization to significant security risks that could compromise sensitive customer data and business operations.
Escalating Operational Costs: Complex maintenance requirements, challenging system integrations, and inefficient operations were driving costs to unsustainable levels, straining the company’s resources and budget.
Recognizing that these risks would soon become prohibitive, the insurance company initiated a comprehensive global modernization effort. After thoroughly evaluating multiple solutions, they selected EvolveWare’s Intellisys platform as their automation partner to achieve rapid transformation while mitigating risk.
Challenges
The initial phase required a modernization tool capable of handling diverse programming languages and frameworks, including Oracle Forms and Reports, legacy .NET applications, iSeries COBOL, and PL/SQL stored procedures. Future phases would introduce additional technologies, further expanding the scope. The organization needed comprehensive documentation of each application to ensure that no critical components were overlooked during migration.
The client’s applications contain proprietary business logic and intellectual property that differentiate their operations in the marketplace. Additionally, these systems process highly sensitive personal and financial data subject to strict regulatory requirements. Any modernization solution needed to support on-premises deployment or private cloud environments to maintain control over sensitive code and data.
As a full insurance legacy transformation initiative spanning multiple applications and business units, the organization required a solution that could accommodate various modernization scenarios and outcomes. The project also needed to adapt to evolving technology choices and maintenance standards that emerged during the initiative, without significantly impacting timelines or project scope.
The client was able to provide only a limited number of test cases to test the transformed code. These test cases tested a very small percentage of the transformed code and were not sufficient to deem the modern application production ready.
Solution
Generate the documentation for each legacy system in scope. Individual repositories were created from which a user could access artifacts such as an assessment of technical debt, connectivity diagrams to understand code and database dependencies and extraction of logic in multiple formats.
Identify missing inventory for each application processed through the platform, ensuring the final set of artifacts were complete.
Transform a prioritized set of applications to modern .NET and Java in modern frameworks using a combination of rules-based AI and localized large language models (LLMs)
EvolveWare provided the personnel resources to process the code through Intellisys and verify and complete any modern code that was not transformed by Intellisys. The team also wrote additional test cases to increase code coverage.
Results
Achieved time savings of thousands of developer hours based on client evaluation of other methods under consideration for documenting and migrating these systems.
Generated comprehensive documentation artifacts at 100% automation for over 6 million LOC written in IBM iSeries COBOL, Oracle Forms and Reports, legacy .NET, and PL/SQL stored procedures.
Migrated just under 2MM LOC from several legacy technologies to modern languages and frameworks. The modern code was 95% complete and compilable and was generated using an AI-centered process:
Transformed code successfully passed all the test cases. Client led initial testing of the transformed code and is currently parallel testing the transformed code with the equivalent source applications.
Enhanced Intellisys platform capabilities to accommodate mid-project changes while minimizing the impact on project timelines.
Completed this first phase of the project in just 9 months including delays related to missing files and process changes. Client is currently compiling a list of projects to be completed in “Phase 2”.
