We recently sat down with our CTO, Bruce Kirchner, to discuss legacy modernization and system transformation in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. This is the first of a 2 part series discussing the state of application modernization, the current and potential impact of AI and digital transformation, and what organizations should be considering as they work on finding value amongst the hype.
As has been seen in a series of articles, many organizations are struggling to implement AI technologies effectively and therefore to reap any benefits. Some of this can be attributed to legacy systems and the mismatch of platforms used to run AI models at scale. However, organizations are still hesitant to update and transform these systems due to the complexities and perceived costs and risks involved in the migration. And there are those that believe that AI and particularly Generative AI (GenAI) can reduce these challenges to the point where it’s better to wait to see what impact the latest AI technologies can have on the modernization process before committing to an effort. But what will it take to get there and what is the opportunity cost of waiting?
What are the challenges with legacy systems and AI and digital transformation?
Legacy systems, often decades old, were built in an era before AI and modern data analytics. These systems typically:
- Use outdated programming languages and architectures with a dwindling talent pool for support
- Lack integration capabilities with modern tools and platforms
- Have limited data storage and processing capabilities
- Face security vulnerabilities due to lack of updates
As a result, enterprises relying on legacy systems face significant hurdles in implementing AI and digital transformation such as:
- Losing critical functionality in a modern version of an application due to a lack of understanding of the current version of the app
- The inability to efficiently use data from legacy systems to power AI models
- The risk of exacerbating vulnerabilities present in the current version of the application resulting in information leakage
Are there reasons to keep legacy systems in place and not implement AI and digital transformation?
While AI has been touted as a game-changing force, not every enterprise use case requires an AI model. For example, a credit card processor that uses a legacy system written in COBOL to handle and log incoming transactions will most likely not see any benefit to incorporating AI into this process. And from a reliability standpoint, there can be benefits to staying with tried and true programming languages such as COBOL that won’t suddenly sunset or where an organization has to worry about backwards compatibility. However, the challenges mentioned above still stand in addition to other hidden costs of not modernizing your legacy applications. So the question is how long are you willing to wait? And what may you lose out on in the process of waiting?
The Modernization Imperative
Legacy modernization is more than just converting code. True system transformation requires thinking about the new environment and determining how best to build that system so that it works efficiently within that new environment. And with the maturity of AI technologies today, automating that entire process for say an application of 1.5 million lines of code is not possible and won’t be possible in the near future. So with that being the case, organizations need to think through their costs of waiting. Can you live with where you are for say the next 5 years, assuming that AI technologies will mature enough by then to completely redefine these efforts?
While that answer is ultimately up to your organization, we believe that it should be and is a resounding “No” in many cases thanks to:
- Rising maintenance costs and risks for legacy applications (thanks to the “shrinking talent pool” as well as technical debt)
- The opportunity cost of not modernizing only continuing to increase
And while the modernization process is certainly not inexpensive and has its challenges, using automation tools like the Intellisys platform combined with a proven approach and defined processes will help you achieve success and take advantage of long-term cost savings and innovation benefits.
It Takes Years to Build an Organization’s Brand and Only Minutes to Tear it Down
Legacy modernization is not just about replacing old technology; it’s about creating a foundation that enables organizations to protect their brand, their operations, and ultimately their future. By addressing the limitations associated with legacy systems in today’s environment, organizations can unlock new opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and competitive advantage. Waiting for AI to become a “silver bullet” for application modernization means waiting to shore up your risk and waiting to transform your organization. And only you can determine if the organization can in fact afford that.
